First Responder Courses

Intended Audience:
First Responder Initial: This course, adhering to current
Department of Transportation National Guidelines, is designed for individuals working in the fire, law enforcement, rescue
services, industrial environments, school teachers, or any other person that may be the first to respond to an emergency.
This course includes the American Heart Association BLS (CPR) Healthcare Provider initial course. We can easily adapt this
course to fit varied work schedules. Please contact us for details.
First Responder Renewal: This course follows the current guidelines established by the Tennessee Division of EMS for State
First Responder Certification Renewal. This continuing education hour course is designed to assist the First Responder
in maintaining First Responder Certification. Topics include: AHA BLS (CPR) Healthcare Provider Renewal and course completion
card, legal and ethical issues, basic human anatomy and physiology review, medical and trauma patient assessment, airway
management, medical and trauma emergencies, childbirth, infants and children, rescue and EMS operations,
Safety/Hazard communication & documentation, and TN EMS updates. Successful completion of this course will renew
certification of the First Responder as well as provide nationally-recognized Continuing Education Hours for EMTs and
EMT-Paramedics toward License renewal. This course is usually completed in one session and can easily be modified to fit your
need.
Course Details
These courses are conducted within the current guidelines as published by the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Tennessee Division of EMS. All First Responder courses must be pre-approved
by the Tennessee Division of EMS. Course completion verification may be used for continuing education units (CEU)
towards State First Responder Certification and State EMT or EMT-Paramedic License renewal and National Registry re-registration.

Pre-registration is required for either course.
*Fees for the First Responder Initial
Course include: course instruction fee, American Heart Association BLS (CPR) Initial Course with course completion card, First Responder Textbook, First Responder
Workbook, course materials (paperwork, handouts, etc), the initial State First Responder Certification Application
Fee, the initial State First Responder License Fee, completion and submission of State required documentation and fees, and
post-course completion certificates. Participants are responsible for providing their own CPR pocket mask and bandage sheers,
which are available for purchase (wholesale price) on the first day of class.
**Fees for the First

DO NOT include: National Registry application process and payment for National Registry registration
and testing. Please go to www.nremt.org for details. *The State of Tennessee currently
utilzes the National Registry examinations as the Initial State Certification examination. Therefore, successful
completion of a State approved First Responder Course taught by a State approved First Responder Instructor through and approved
by the State EMS Regional Consultant, with submission of required documentation and fees, and successful
completion of the National Registry written examination are required for Initial Certification as a
First Responder in Tennessee. If further information is required please contact either your TN EMS Regional Consultant or
the State EMS office.
